About Intergroup

Intergroup’s monthly hybrid meeting is held on the last Sunday of the month at 1 pm at the Triangle Club, 1005 SE 4th Ave, Gainesville.

Is Your Home Group in The Know?

Each group is encouraged to elect an Intergroup Representative and an Alternate Intergroup Representative to attend monthly Intergroup meetings. Only Intergroup Reps may vote at the monthly meetings. In their absence, Alt Intergroup Reps may vote.

What is Intergroup’s purpose?

Intergroup’s primary purpose is to assist the AA groups of Gainesville and the surrounding areas in carrying the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to those who still suffer.  Intergroup derives its legitimate authority from, and is responsible to the member groups which it serves.  In all its activities, policies and proceedings, Intergroup observes the practice and spirit of AA’s Twelve Traditions and Twelve concepts for World Service, as well as its three legacies of Recovery, Unity and Service.

How is Intergroup organized?

North Central Florida Intergroup serves Alachua County and surrounding areas.  Currently, there are groups meeting in approximately 100 locations in this area. They represent approximately over 1,000 individual AA members.

Each of these AA groups is entitled to elect a representative to Intergroup.  These Intergroup Representatives reflect the collective AA conscience for Intergroup.  They meet the last Sunday each month at 1:00 pm at the Triangle Club 1005 SE 4th Ave. and set the policy and direction for local AA service in the area, as well as providing a communication vehicle back to the AA groups and individual members.  The Intergroup Office is run by a full time paid manager under the general oversight of a Steering Committee elected annually from these Intergroup Representatives.

How is Intergroup supported?

In keeping with the Seventh of the Twelve Traditions (self support), Intergroup is largely supported by financial contributions from AA groups and individual members.  A small portion of its revenue is derived from the sale of AA Conference-approved literature, meeting directories, medallions and other literature.

Group Contributions: Groups are encouraged to make regular contributions to Intergroup.  The recommended system of group support follows the 40-40-10-10 plan:

  • 40% to North Central Florida Intergroup
  • 40% to District Committee
  • 10% to Area Assembly
  • 10% to GSO

Faithful Tener’s & Fiver’s: Individual members contribute a minimum of $5.00 each month.  A variation of this plan is the “double nickel” – a contribution of $10.00 each month.  Many members realize that they spent many times this amount each month on drinking.  If you can contribute, please send payments by PayPal, Venmo, check or just stop by the office.

Personal Participation: Volunteers do much of Intergroup’s work.  The contribution of time and effort is crucial to the continued survival of the Intergroup Office.

What Vital Services does Intergroup Provide?

Serving as a clearinghouse for AA information in the area was the focus of most of Intergroup’s initial activities.  That focus remains a dominant feature of Intergroup’s continuing service to the community. Here is a partial list of the vital services Intergroup furnishes:

  • Provides 24-hour telephone contact with AA.
  • Maintains and publishes a list of AA meetings in the area.
  • Maintains a list of AA members available to do 12-step work.
  • Provides temporary contacts for people getting out of treatment and correctional facilities.
  • Publishes the POST, a monthly newsletter.
  • Handles inquiries about AA from the general public.
  • Offers AA literature, medallions and other related products.
